When an employee arrives in a new country, the assignment clock starts. But if they’re spending their first weeks trying to find a flat, navigate an unfamiliar school system, and figure out how to open a bank account, they’re not focused on their job. They’re in survival mode.
Destination services exist to prevent that. They’re the hands-on, in-country support that takes an employee from arrival to settled: a guided orientation of the new city, a managed home search, help finding the right school for their children, and the practical settling-in support that lets them concentrate on the role they were relocated to do.
For HR teams, destination services are also how you meet your duty of care obligations and protect the organisation’s investment in the move. When a high number of failed relocations come down to the family not settling in, the quality of your destination support directly affects whether the assignment delivers.
Why destination services matter
The business case for structured destination support comes down to three things: productivity, retention, and risk.
Research by Crown World Mobility found that 84% of employees are more productive when properly supported during a relocation. EY’s 2025 Global Mobility survey found that 64% of employees say international assignments would encourage them to stay in their current organisation — but that benefit disappears quickly if the experience is poorly managed. And when things go wrong, the cost is high: a KPMG and Ipsos report published in 2024 put the potential cost of a single failed international assignment at up to $1.25 million, factoring in lost productivity, replacement costs, and reputational damage.
Destination services are the layer of support most directly connected to whether an assignment succeeds or fails. Getting employees and their families properly settled, with a home that works, schools sorted, and the basics of daily life in place, is what makes the difference between an assignment that delivers and one that ends early.

What Gerson Relocation’s destination services include
Gerson Relocation’s destination services cover every stage from pre-move preparation through to end-of-assignment departure. Each case is managed by a dedicated Relocation Manager who coordinates the full service delivery, supported by locally-based specialists in the employee’s destination country.
Pre-assignment orientation and area tour
Before an employee commits to a location or signs a lease, it helps to see it first. Gerson Relocation’s orientation programme gives employees and their families a guided tour of the new city: housing areas, commute routes, local schools, healthcare facilities, and the practical infrastructure of daily life.
The aim isn’t a glossy introduction. It’s to help the family make informed decisions: which neighbourhood fits their lifestyle, how far the schools are from realistic housing options, what the commute actually looks like. Employees who complete an orientation trip arrive more confident and make faster housing decisions, which reduces the overall time to settle.
Home search and lease negotiation
Finding the right rental property in an unfamiliar city is time-consuming and easy to get wrong. Gerson Relocation pairs the employee with a locally-based consultant who knows the market, understands the company’s policy and budget, and accompanies them on property viewings.
Once a property is identified, Gerson Relocation handles lease negotiation directly — checking terms, pushing back where appropriate, and making sure the employee isn’t signing something that will cause problems six months in. Lease negotiation is included as standard.
Temporary housing and serviced accommodation
In most relocations, there’s a gap between the employee’s arrival and moving into their long-term home. Gerson Relocation arranges serviced accommodation and short-term lets to cover this period, sourced in line with the company’s policy and the employee’s household needs.
For assignments where serviced accommodation is the right long-term solution — short-term or project-based postings, for example — Gerson Relocation’s team has preferential arrangements with providers in key destinations and can source options that work within policy budgets.
School search and education support
Schooling is consistently one of the factors with the greatest influence on whether a family feels settled. Gerson Relocation’s education service covers the full process: understanding the family’s requirements, identifying suitable schools, arranging visits, managing applications, and supporting specialist needs where relevant.
For families moving to destinations with different curriculum systems, language of instruction, or competitive admissions processes, this support matters from day one. It also removes a significant administrative burden from the HR team — school searches in unfamiliar markets are time-intensive and easy to underestimate.
Settling-in support
The practical administration of arriving in a new country is easy to underestimate. Banking, utilities, doctors registration, council registration, car insurance — a dozen tasks sit between arrival and feeling genuinely at home. Gerson Relocation’s settling-in service works through these with the employee, ensuring the basics are in place and that there’s a responsive contact when something doesn’t go smoothly.
This is where the employee experience of a relocation is often won or lost. Local knowledge and a real point of contact during the first three months make a tangible difference to how quickly employees are established and performing.
Cultural and language training
For moves involving significant cultural distance, or where language is a practical barrier to daily life, Gerson Relocation provides cultural briefings and language training tailored to the destination. Both are available for the employee and their family, covering workplace norms, social customs, and the context that helps people adapt without early friction.
Timing matters: this support is most effective when it starts before departure, not after the employee has already run into problems.
Departure services
At the end of an assignment, there’s a parallel set of administrative tasks to manage on the way out. Our departure service covers lease termination, utility disconnections, property check-out and deposit return, mail forwarding, and the practical handover that employees often have to manage themselves if a provider doesn’t offer it.
Handling departure properly protects the employee from financial exposure on lease terms and gives the HR team a clean close to the assignment.

How Gerson Relocation delivers destination services globally
We operate a managed network of destination service providers covering 180+ countries. For each location, Gerson Relocation works with two or more approved, independently assessed partners who understand local housing markets, school systems, and the administrative requirements of that country.
This isn’t a referral list. Every partner has been assessed against defined quality standards and is actively managed on an ongoing basis. The employee’s dedicated Relocation Manager, based in the UK, coordinates the full in-country delivery and acts as the consistent point of contact for both the HR team and the employee throughout.
Where we differ from a pure relocation management company is that we also deliver the physical household move. One contract covers the entire relocation: survey and packing at origin, transit and customs clearance, through to home search and settling-in at destination. One account manager, one point of accountability and no handoff between a logistics supplier and a separate DSP ensures a smooth transition.

Destination services as part of your relocation programme
Destination services don’t sit in isolation. For most employees, they’re the final — and most visible — part of a relocation programme that also includes immigration, household move management, and ongoing assignment support.
Gerson Relocation integrates destination services into the broader assignment rather than treating them as a separate line item. Immigration work — visas, work permits, right-to-work verification — runs in parallel, so the employee’s arrival timeline is tied to compliance, not just logistics. The household move is coordinated around the home search, so goods arrive when the employee is ready for them.
For HR teams managing multiple simultaneous relocations or building a corporate mobility programme, this reduces the coordination burden considerably. You’re not managing four separate suppliers across a single employee’s move.
To understand how destination services fit into a broader policy structure — core-flex frameworks, lump sum moves, executive programmes — see our policy bundle pages.

Including destination services in your relocation policy
How you structure destination services in your policy determines how consistently employees receive them and how manageable the costs are.
For long-term assignments of 12 months or more, a full service suite — orientation, home search, school search, settling in, cultural training — is standard. The cost is small relative to the total assignment spend, and the protection against early return is real.
For short-term or project-based moves, a lighter package focused on temporary housing and a settling-in consultation is usually sufficient. The key is making the service menu explicit in the policy so that employees know what they’re entitled to and HR teams aren’t making ad-hoc decisions under time pressure.
We can work with your team to map appropriate service levels to your assignment types and advise on what organisations in comparable sectors typically include. If you’re building or reviewing a relocation policy, the Global Mobility programme management page covers the broader framework.
